1. How did interpersonal relationships and/or collaboration at work influence your understanding of life outside of high school?
Working with my mentor and the other trainers showed me that I never want to work in an office space. My mentor and the other trainers were really fun to work with. Other than working out, we would joke around a lot. They were adults but still pretty young so it was just like hanging out with a bunch of teenagers. From this, I also learned that there is a time to mess around, and a time to be serious. We would play around when we weren't busy, but when we were working out or shadowing, we couldn't mess around. We had to watch the way our mentors were training their clients. When they were done, they would ask us questions to make sure we were paying attention. Same with working out, we had to watch exactly how each form was done so we could do it ourselves. 2. How might externship influence the direction of your life? Externship directed me into what I want in the future. From this experience, I learned that this is the job that I want to have. I gained so much from this externship. I got stronger and I lost a good amount of weight. It has taught me things that I can do on my own and don't have to be reliant on others to complete. I saw amazing things from this externship. I saw two NFL players and got the chance to talk to them. I got to see what it was like to train them. That's what I want to keep doing. I wan't to continue becoming fit and strong. I want to be able to meet famous people like that and train them or with them. 1. How did your project go from an idea or inspiration to a final product?
At first, Andrew and I's main idea was to just share our blog post. It would have a few pictures and we would present to the people what we did through the posts. We thought that this wasn't something people would really enjoy so we decided to create a video/documentary. It would show not just us working out but everything we do. It would range from waking up in the morning, making breakfast, driving to the gym, and working out, etc... This video is meant to give a full experience not just within the externship itself, but how it influences us to change and work at home. 2. How did you measure the success of the work you did while you were an intern/working on a project? What did you learn from this? I measured my success in literal numbers. When I first started working out at this gym, I weighed 230 pounds. Over the past few weeks, I have dropped to 220 pounds. I am also getting stronger. When I first started bench pressing, I could only lift the 45 pound bar with 10's on the side. Now, I am up to 35's on the side. I also measured success in how much I learned. I am constantly having to research different exercise vocabulary. In addition. I am learning new techniques and exercises in order to get stronger and prevent injury. I learned what not to eat and what to eat and that you don't have to starve yourself in order to lose weight. From this, I have learned that working everyday and pushing through the things you don't want to do will show great results. Before finding this internship, I wanted to make sure that it would fit into my career choice. I wanted something that would give me the experience I needed in order to pursue the career I wanted. Picking this internship has done exactly that. In all shapes and form, I have learned a lot when it comes to being an athletic trainer and physical therapist. I have learned that physical aspect, scientific aspect, and the economic aspect. So far, my mentor and some of his other colleagues are teaching me all of these things. Already they are professionals but there has been certain points where even they want to learn more. Even though they know a lot of stuff, they are always questioning why we do certain things and wanting to learn more. They make sure that I see that and always make sure that I am paying attention so I can do the same. This could help me strive in college and my career because it drives to me always learn more. This internship has given me a feel of what job I want and I am excited to go further in life to experience it fully.
I have no pictures of me and my mentor because he's to busy training me or working out. He is also finding a new location to train me. I will get one tomorrow. I commented on Ben Sennes' and Priscilla Sandoval's posts. Some ways I have showed self advocacy was when I didn't know something. Whenever Chris or Bruce had us do something and I didn't know why, I asked. More specifically, when I shadow Chris when he's training his clients, he does something that I don't understand. I ask him about it afterwards to know why he does that thing. For instance, today when his client was doing a back exercise, he would touch his back with his hand. I learned that he does this because people will instinctively tighten that area when you touch it. It is more of a psychological thing that people react to.
Am I glad I found this internship?
I am very glad that I found this internship. I get to workout and get stronger. When first coming here, I was slightly worried that I would just be working out and not learning anything other than new exercises but I have learned a lot. So far Chris, Bruce (Andrew's trainer), and Andrew have taught me new exercises and forms. Chris has also taught me exercise terms that are important to know in the career I want to follow. Today he taught me some new things about exercising. He taught me about supersets and complex sets. Supersets are exercises that focus on another muscle area. For example, if I was working with quads, I would superset with hamstring workouts. Complex sets are exercises that stay all in the same muscle area. Chris has also taught me about the business behind being a personal trainer and how to create a resume for yourself so people will want to be your client. Schedule: I will continue working out everyday and also implement my new meal plan daily. Do I have enough time? I think I have enough time to achieve what I want. My goal was to gain positive results and so far I have lost (I think) a few pounds and am gradually bringing up the weight I am lifting. With the time that is left I think I will find positive results by the end of externship. I commented on Alec Roberts' and Jacob Rozar's posts. Mentor's Mission:
I learned that my mentor Chris' main mission is to help people become fit. It is not about adding a bunch of weight and having people hurt themselves. Chris really wants people to learn right techniques and form when working out so that they don't hurt themselves. He also wants people to learn the right way to eat and control their portions. What Have I Learned? So far I have learned several new exercises and what parts of the body they help. I have also learned some physiology terms. I learned three new muscle contraptions and three vocabulary terms that relate to periods of time in which you exercise. What's Next? Chris is having me write down what I eat every day and how much I am eating. He is also going to check how much body fat I have. The best day to visit him is any weekday from 12 to 3 pm. I commented on Andrew Olivera and Kylila Patton's posts. |
