GREEK PLAY FESTIVAL PROJECT
Erin's PLAY
WHAT IT WAS ABOUT
For this project, people wrote different plays and as a class we voted on which one was the best. The play that was voted the best was then going to be competing in a competition against the other classes. The play that we used was called A Monster To Be Made by two of our students, Molly and Cecilia. The play was about a young boy Raphael who turns 12. His parents are happy for him but they know that the army might come and take him away. Raphael is then forced in to the army and must serve the captain. He has two choices, to do as the captain says and become a monster, or disobey, remain as a young boy, and be killed. The role I took in this play was as an actor and a backdrop painter. As an actor, I played a little boy who gets taken in to the army with Raphael, and as a backdrop painter I had to paint what would be a rain forest or jungle as a background. I think that having to do two different jobs, I am very proud that I was able to accomplish both. Some things I would change is to put a lot more detail and effort in to the backdrop to make it look very realistic . One thing I would change as an actor would be to try out for a bigger part and not be afraid.
Into The Wild Project(Humanities PArt)
What It Was About
For the humanities part of this project we had to read a book Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer. Every chapter we would respond to questions and put them in our journal. Every couple of weeks we would debate or discuss these questions. After this we started making our final journals. In these final journals we would put both humanities and physics excerpts. When we went on the trip we had to write three journal entries. They could be about anything that happened on the trip, for instance you could write about dinner, the bus ride, setting up, the hike, etc... We also had to draw a sketch of anything from the trip and you had to create your own version of the campsite. It included different things that were required and were optional. We even created our own print ads for the equipment we made in physics class. Our print ads had to sound like it was being put in to a magazine so we had to make it sound persuasive. When we were finished, students in the class voted who had the best. I got 2cnd place. Once we we came back from the trip, we created our final journals and put in all the things we did for Humanities and Physics.
SOCIAL JUSTICE PROJECT
What it was about
In this project ,we started off by picking a social issue, such as racism, domestic violence, drug abuse, and much more. Once we chose an issue we had to create a research binder. This is where we put all of our information. The information we had to find was categorized, the history of the issue, how it affects others, etcetera. Once we found all the research we needed, we started to write our essays. Starting from our introduction all the way to our conclusion. Every time we wrote one part of the essay, it was revised and we would fix it. While we were doing this we also had to do community service. We also had to make a group element, something that represented what your social justice issue was. Once we turned in our essays and community service, we had to add five items to our class collage. These items could be pictures, statistics, and more. This is all the things we did on our project.
Commmunity Service reflection
For community service, I went to two different places. First I helped out at my dad's work with the canned food drive helping sort out foods. Secondly, some other students in my class and I went to Father Joes, an organization that helps homeless people by giving them a place to eat and a place to stay. When we went to Father Joes, there were many different jobs, from serving food, seating people, serving juice, and more. My job was to pour juice for the people after they got their food. Before I was doing this service, I was a bit skeptical thinking that it wasn't going to be fun and really lame. I also thought the people were going to be scary and crazy. But when we got there and started working it was actually really fun because you had to work non stop and fast. Also almost all the homeless people there were really nice and polite. When I was there, I realized how much people in San Diego needed help. This is an experience that I would do again.
Group element
For the project, one thing we had to do was create a group element. Something that represented what issue did, it could range from making t-shirts, a painting, basically anything. For my groups group element, we decided to make cookies. For extra credit, we decided to make sweet sugar cinnamon plantains because of racism in Puerto Rico. The slogan for our cookies was, "Two Colors, Same Taste." The cookies were both white and black but on the inside they tasted exactly the same. The reason why we chose this project was because we wanted to think outside the box instead of just making a poster or a painting. I think that our group element portrayed racism very well. For the group element, the original plan was for all of us to bake cookies. But, on the night of exhibition, only two of us were there so my partner and I had to make the plantains and sell them. We also had to sell the cookies as well. For this project, I wouldn't change anything we did.
